I apologize for all the questions at once, but I really need to learn the differences between AISI/SAE and ASTM and when and how to use them. I also realize that there are other topics on this, but they have all dealt with specific examples, I am looking for some help in understanding the fundamentals of specifying a material. Thank you!

However, when you reach 0.30%, you're into a medium carbon steel which can be hardened. Nearly all my work is of A36, and I forge weld it without trouble. I don't use excessively large sparking heats when welding, and that seems to help.

guys, today my boss asked me if 1215 is weldable. i said i didnt know. he then said he will order 1018 instead, assuming 1018 is weldable. i searched on the net and found a few sites that said because of 1215's very high sulphur content, weld ability is considered poor. im no metallurgist, so i will just stay away from ever attempting to welding it.
